WHAT IS OXIDATIVE STRESS?
Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance of oxidants (free radicals) and antioxidants where the free radicals are in abundance and roam unchecked. The free radicals cause degeneration and cell damage, leading to a number of diseases and speeds up aging processes. For example, free radicals can create high levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) also known as the bad cholesterol, and contribute to the buildup of plaque on artery walls (atherosclerosis). This can eventually slow down or block blood flow, causing heart attacks and stroke.
WHAT CAN AN EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF OXIDATIVE STRESS HELP ME AVOID?
High levels and accumulation of oxidative stress is involved in a number of pathological process, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, stroke, cancer, macular degeneration, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart disease, hypertension, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, inflammatory conditions and environmental sensitivity.
WHAT KIND OF ANTIOXIDANT TESTING CAN I GET AT OPTIMUS HEALTH CLINIC?
We offer two kinds of antioxidant tests: a blood test and a skin test. The blood test measures the levels of antioxidants and oxidants in your blood, but these levels tend to fluctuate throughout the day, which is why we complement it with a skin test. The skin test measures the levels of carotenoid antioxidants in your skin. Carotenoids are a powerful antioxidant that provides an excellent indicator of your overall antioxidant levels as carotenoids levels remain stable.
